Shoei Qwest Helmet

Shoei’s name means that as a company they are naturally expected to make a great touring helmet and thankfully, the Qwest can handle this pressure. Shaped by what Shoei claims to be countless hours in their very own wind tunnel, important details like shell design and foam placement have been refined to cancel out noise and reduce drag and lift. The ventilation system is also wind tunnel tested and this has resulted in large upper intakes and rear exhaust vents that maximize the Venturi effect. The proven ORSA shield carries over from other helmet models like the X-Twelve and when combined with Shoei’s typical knack for quality, the Qwest becomes a very, competent touring helmet.

Visor will not stay craked open

This is my 6th Shoei in 30 years and 240,000 miles of riding. Unfortunately this one is a lemon in that the visor will not stay cracked open. On either of the first two settings the visor will snap shut whenever I'm above 50 MPH and this is behind a wind-diverting screen on my BMW R1150R. Since it's not pleasant riding in hot weather without some airflow and it's impossible in the winter to ride without ventilation to keep breath from fogging at stops, I'm beginning to think this will be my last Shoei.

SHOEI helmet

The helmet is pretty good, but I'd expect a bit more from Shoei. On the positive side, it's very light weight, comfortable, extremely quiet with a closed face shield, and has an excellent reputation for quality. That almost justifies the price. On the down side, one would expect a premium manufacturer to switch from D-rings to a clasp. Perhaps I've just gotten used to it on a pricier Schubert helmet, and I do miss it a lot. The fit is a tiny bit loose after a week. Finally, and I see this theme recurring in other reviews, the face shield has a tendency to fog even inn not-so-cold weather. I'd say it's with the money, but now I do wish I'd spend a bit more on a new Schuberth...

Very Nice, But A Few Quirks

There are many nice details on this helmet: The fit is fantastic, the view port is the widest I've ever had on a full face helmet and the finish is 1st rate. Really, this is probably the nicest, most comfortable helmet I've ever had, and I've been riding over 30 years so I've had a lot of helmets. The problems are minor and more annoyance than anything else. 1. It does fog quickly when cold, especially at traffic lights. The easy solution is just to crack the visor open when stopped. 2. It does whistle kind of loudly when at speed, especially with the visor open. I don't notice this so much on my touring bike but it's really noticeable on my sport touring machine. If I lean out into the wind the sound seems to go away so it might not be a problem on a naked bike. One good thing about this is I can tell right away if I forgot my ear plugs. Once the plugs are in it's not even noticeable. 3. At this price point I really would have liked a quick release on the strap. I've had one on my last several helmets and never paid over $200 for them, so a $330 helmet should have more than double D rings. Overall I'm very happy with the helmet and will probably buy another Shoei when this one is done.

Just right

Very comfortable fit. I have a wide head and forced to use XXL in other brands. Great fit and easy to get on, very quiet and tight around visor. Visor optically very good.

Another great helmet from Shoei

In the past 210,000 miles of riding this is my 5th or 6th helmet from Shoei and like the earlier ones it is a great helmet. The fit is perfect - the helmet is quiet - and the aerodynamic design good. Starting around 2000 or so the seem to have paid more attention to the aerodynamics of their helmets and this one follows that trend. At speed there is almost a sensation of no wind resistance as the slip stream quietly passes over the helmet. If they could only add tiny built-in windshield wipers they'd be perfect.

Qwest

Second SHOEI helmet. Had an X-11 from my sportbike days and still wore it on my HD. Finally decided to purchase a helmet designed for a more upright riding position. The QWEST totally fit the bill. This helmet fits my head perfectly. With installing the breath guard and the chin piece, this helmet has very low wind and road noise. The visor seats extremely well when closed and provides an excellent seal. I am extremely happy with this purchase and will continue to use SHOEI helmets for all of my riding needs. If you ride cruisers or sport tourers, you cannot go wrong with this helmet.

This helmet is exactly what I thought it would be. I went from an X-11 to this QWEST helmet. Quality is typical SHOEI and the fit is great. I noticed that the face shield has a tight seal and is very quiet, despite some other reviews here. Try a helmet that actually fits your head. A great quality helmet at a great price. I ride a cruiser and this thing fits the bill. You will not be disappointed.

SHOEI Qwest - worth it

This is my 4th Shoei helmet, the Qwest is just as good as my previous RF-1000 and RF-1100 helmets. I average 10-20K miles per year and have ridden in all kinds of weather from 100F to sleeting roads; in each of those conditions the Qwest has always been a comfortable, secure, reliable helmet. Buy a couple of aftermarket tinted visors, and it's a great all around helmet. Be sure to wash the removable foam now and then to keep it relatively fresh. At least two of my fellow rider friends have bought their own Qwest helmets on my recommendation. I'd buy one again when my helmet needs to be replaced. For anyone on the fence, trust me. A comfortable helmet makes a big difference in enjoying your confidence and seat time. I'd rather have good comfortable gear on a so-so bike than have uncomfortable gear on a fast bike.

I love the helmet. Replaces my RF1100. Better suited to touring. Good ventilation. Improved range of vision. Shoei is hard to beat.

Great but...

I wish I knew that the liner was not removable before purchasing. I overlooked it or it wasn't highly advertised that it wasn't removable. Cheekpads come off but the rest doesn't. I would spend money on the removable next time.

Fogs too much

I bought this helmet to replace a Shoei TZR and just finished a 4,000 mile ride with it. The fit is almost the same as the TZR. Box does include both a breath and chin guard but they are cheaply made and smaller compared to the ones from the TZR. The helmet has about the same noise as my TZR. My big complaint with this helmet is that it fogs very easily, and the fogging is hard to clear once it is there. If you ride in the rain in cool conditions, you will most likely have problems.

Great helmet.

I bought this helmet because of the spring-assisted faceshield seal. Seals completely, eliminating air and water leaks, even in pouring rain. The ventilation is great. This the first helmet I've had where I can actually feel a breeze on the top of my head. It flows so well, I have to close the top vent during the rain or my head gets damp! There are grooves in the lining so that I don't have any problem wearing glasses.

Shoei Qwest

First mid-premium helmet after wearing a CycleCrap helmet for a few years. Looks amazing. Easy shield exchange. Takes a few seconds. Great snug fit (medium). Good airflow due to the well-placed vents. When all the vents are open it can get loud, however. It does whistle a bit when doing high speed lane checks. Wear your ear plugs and its not really an issue. Very happy with this purchase.

too loud

Sort of dissappointed with it, maybe the shape of my head. The whistling or say wind noise is prevalent as soon as I am moving and its loud. The helmet fits good though, but with no removable liner, honestly its more than the value of other helmets in its class.
