Bell Vortex Helmet

Even though it may be the little brother to the Star, the Bell Vortex is the farthest thing from being a push over in the family line. Built to give up little in the way of comfort and options, the Vortex shares a range of features with the high-end Star such as Velocity Flow Ventilation™ with FlowAdjust™ and the ClickRelease face shield. The race bred designed lightweight shell gives a sleek, slippery shape that allows for unmatched stability at speed and on the inside, contoured cheek pads and a plush removable comfort liner finish it off to give you a complete package at a killer price.

Features:
  • Velocity Flow Ventilation™ system with FlowAdjust™ for maximum stability and temperature control with minimal noise and buffeting
  • Lightweight composite polycarbonate alloy shell
  • Contour cheek pads (by means of stacked foam, not hand cut)
  • Removable and washable, antibacterial/antimicrobial interior comfort liner
  • Padded wind collar to drastically reduce wind/road noise
  • Integrated speaker pockets for audio speakers
  • ClickRelease™ for the fastest, easiest, tool-free shield swaps ever
  • NutraFog II™ superior anti-fog, anti-scratch and UV protected shield

After 5 years and 17,000 miles

I bought this helmet thinking that I would replace in with a more expensive helmet within a year or so. Well 5 years later and the helmet has served me well. I may replace it with another Vortex but am leaning toward an RS-1 just to upgrade. (Lighter and possibly a bit quieter. ) The visor system works well and has a detent the leaves about an inch gap which I use for a bit when starting out but not at high speed. As far as wind noise, this is my first full coverage helmet so I can't rate it against other helmets but I am comfortable with the sound level with a 70 mph airspeed. Riding 70 mph against a 35 mph wind calls for ear plugs. (I worked in a noisy job for 40+ years and used enough ear protection to be able to retire with excellent hearing so I am pretty aware of exposure levels.)

Great Helmet

Pros: Vents provide great air flow. It is super light weight and doesn't fog up like my Arai. The visor is easily interchangeable. I use the Transitions Lens and it is amazing. The shield latch is easy to lock/unlock with winter gloves on. Cons: Fits pretty snug. My neck catches a lot of wind. Overall, I love this helmet!

Close but has a few flaws...

I've had some time with my Vortex, so wanted to give a quick review. It's a good fitting and good looking helmet, with all safety ratings and features you would want. The shield system is excellent, and works perfect. However the negatives are a bit annoying. I'm guessing Bell is only using a few shell sizes, because my medium is huge and barely fits in my bikes cases- not a deal breaker, but it's big. My only other complaint is it's a very noisy helmet, vents open or not.

Noisiest helmet ever made

The wind noise while wearing this helmet is almost unbearable. It is so loud that while riding my sport bike with a loud aftermarket exhaust, you cannot hear the engine while moving. Also the face shield does not have detents in its movement, so you can not run with it part way open. If you try, at about forty mph it will suddenly slam shut. It also runs small.

Good buy

The helmet is great. Looks good and feels good. It came with huge cheekpads that squeeze your face. Once I got the smaller pads (40mm) for $15, it fit great. I would recommend this helmet.

Lives Up To All The Reviews!

This helmet is everything Bell claims and everything the reviews say! It's top notch all around. I've had the same helmet for nearly four years, so it was time for an upgrade. I researched for months, and I ultimately landed on this one. I've never looked back. It's well-priced (shop around), it's stylish (I've gotten so many compliments), it's comfy (lots of nice features), and well-designed (easy release faceplates, pocket speakers, etc etc...). I'd highly recommend!

Quality helmet, best in this price range

Overall, I am very happy with this helmet. The cheek pads are a little tight, but I think they'll break in over time. I wear a large and ordered a large. The rest of the helmet is a perfect fit. Quality construction. Easy breakdown for cleaning. Really good airflow. You hear the wind, but that doesn't bother me as I ride with the visor up most of the time anyway.

Not what I expected.

I needed to replace an older Shoei helmet but didn't want to spend the dough for another Shoei. Based on the reviews, I decided to go with the Bell Vortex. There is no eyeglass port! Cant wear my glasses! It's actually very quiet-til you start moving. More wind noise than I like but tolerable. Also since I ride some in the cold there is unwanted cold air on my forehead. With no breath box the shield does not fog- a plus over the Shoei. A decent helmet for the money, but I ride a lot.

Bell Vortex Helmet

This is a great helmet. Good snug fit. Not heavy to me at all. Vision is great through it. With all the vents open plenty of air moves through. Great buy. 5 stars

Gave me claustrophobia

The chin piece was too close to my face and I could not move my jaw or lips without touching the helmet. It would have been impossible to use a Camelback with this helmet.

Love it!

I bought this helmet as my first helmet and I love it. Excellent matte black, no frills look. Fits great! Good ventilation on hot days.

Fit me fine, but made my head appears comically large

Functionally, I'm sure this helmet is fine. The reason I had to return it was that it had surpassed a crucial ratio of head-to-helmet that resulted in my looking like the logo for bic pens (bicworld) when wearing it. I took it off and set it next to other size large helmets on the shelf and noticed its total circumference exceeded all the others'. So if you want to look like a fun-park mascot, by all means, pick this helmet up for yourself.

Not worth the money

Figured for the price I would have gotten a much better quality helmet. Paint is chipping in multiple areas. Shield hinge has already broke after 2 months. Air vents and shield locks feel very cheap. Very unimpressed with Bell. Going back to Icon.

Wished it worked out...

I bought this helmet on 3 things. Because its a Bell, the Value, and the Looks. I opened the box and it looked great. I put it on my head and its super big, really bulbous and mostly it felt very heavy and that was just having it on my head for 1 min.
