must have as an alternative to clear
I always need a second visor for my helmets because I live in southern California, and the sun is sometimes just too strong to do without a tinted shield. This is exactly what you'd expect from a replacement shield. I purchased the "mellow smoke" variation and found it almost dark enough for bright sunlight (it could use an ever so slightly darker tint), but light enough that it can be used at night.

Dark shield/MULTITEC helmet
We purchased two of the SHOEI MULTITEC helmets this year, with the dark smoke shields. We previously had a mirrored-finish shield, which we loved. These helmets and shields are fantastic! They are pricey, but we do not have any 'neck-fatigue' with these helmets. They are very light and comfortable. The one minus feature is the slight fogging at slow speeds and sometimes stops. We also own communicators and we do not have to yell at one another because of road noise. We would definitely recommend both the helmet and the dark smoke shields. I would like the 'mirror-finish' shield, but the poor finish on the shield is stopping the purchase.

Great option to replace sunglasses
I have both the clear and dark smoke visors and carry them both. It is very effective and much more comfortable to use the dark tint instead of sunglasses and the optics are super clear. Bring the clear visor for night riding. Highly recommend this item.

Nice Visor
I purchased the dark smoke visor for the X-11 helmet. Use it as needed when riding into the sun, or in brighter conditions. I would say that it's ok for even overcast days, and riding at dusk. The fit is O.E.M. perfect, and is very quick and easy to install thanks to Shoei design. Visor is a great option next to the original clear.

HD Amber Shield
This shield is a must. Ride with it day or night. Only night riding that is a pain is roads without any street lights at all. City and most highway riding in CA has some form of lighting, so the HD shield will show you everything you need to see when riding. Best part of the HD is during sunny days, no more sunglasses. I always rode with glasses until I purchased one of these 3 years ago. Just bought a new helmet and picked up another HD shield, a MUST.

Clear Optics
Seems expensive compared to other brands, but when you want good quality, I guess it pays off in the end.

Shoei - Dark Smoke Shield
The shield made a huge difference for my morning and evening commutes. It is louder than the stock shield as the previous reviews have said...but I started to wear earplugs, so the extra noise doesn't really bother me. I don't think that I’d use it when the sun started going down...I would get it again, though. I might get the amber one for using at night.

Cheaper than prescription sunglasses
The manual from Shoei makes the process of switching face shileds look much more difficult than it is. Very glad I got the dark smoke color shield. Cuts glare way down. I can wear in at night in the city, but not the country. Highly recommend.

Shoei tinted shield
Like every other Shoei helmet product I've used, this shield is well designed. The dark smoke is a good shade for day use. Optical quality is great. Definitely recommended.

Smoke screen
Well the smoke screen is perfectly tinted for day and the occasional accidental night ride. What is not so perfect is the Shoei visor system, which is sticky and fires the windblast directly into your eye sockets at an opening what so ever. Now I see why HJC has such a long draw on the visor, it put the windblast in my mouth and nose where I prefer it. The coating is holding up and no scratches yet.
